8) It’s our monthly CONTEST - DID YOU WIN?? You won't know unless you look! -- 1) TODAY’S ARTFUL DODGER - He’ll Pick Your Pocket With a Smile! The Magical Art, Science And Philosophy Of Making The Sale. By Rick Rossini If you ever had to sell, communicate, teach or influence someone, you will relate to this recent, true-life experience. It all started with a magician and an empty stage. “LOOK HERE - MAGIC – MAGIC TRICK – HERE - NOW,” he barked out at the top of his lungs, “MAGIC – HERE – NOW!” Again and again, even louder than before he repeated this chant, banging his magic wand on the table and turning slowly around in a wide circle so all could see and hear. And almost hypnotically, more and more people were starting to pay attention and come over. “MAGIC – HERE – NOW – WATCH – YOU SIR - think of a card”, instructed the magician motioning towards a pack of cards spread out on the table. “Is this it”, inquired the magic man removing and showing one of the cards? “YES” shrieked the stunned bystander! I have to admit it even I was amazed and mesmerized! But, there were more surprises to follow. The magician repeated the effect again with more members of the crowd, and to everyone’s constant amazement! By this time the audience had now built up to what must have been a good hundred in number, all surrounding and carefully watching this lone performer. And all with the same question burning in their mind, “how is it done”? Now if you had told me that after months of day after day after day of performing shows, the first thing I would want to do on my Holiday was to watch a street magician I would have told you, you were crazy. Yet here I am, with my family at one of Florida’s most beautiful beaches watching this magical Busker. Yes, I like the crowd was entranced! And the hypnotic spell continued. But interestingly enough, in the thirty minutes we spent together our magical friend only did about 4 or 5 tricks; the real magic was how he did them! He was very good and very entertaining. And with a dry, British sense of humour and a quick, acid tongue reminiscent of Don Rickles, he was also very, very funny. He knew how to work the crowd and the crowd (by now even larger in number) loved him! Finally it was the grand finale and then the pay off with passing the hat. And judging by what we and the other audience members contributed I know the performance had to be very profitable for him, and rightly so. After all he had just amazed and entertained some initially disinterested passersby, and had sent them on their way all shaking their heads, laughing and providing them some fond memory to talk about. But for me, he sent me away with something much, much more! This entertainer left me with a very strong metaphor for making real magic happen in our own individual worlds. You see, the older I get the more I realize how everything is interconnected. Magic, selling, learning, life, politics, entertainment, business; they really are all one in the same when you break it down to the “essence” and the “process.” Think about it! To be really successful in all these different areas you only have to follow the same basic formula our street magician did. First, you have to stop the crowd and get their attention. Next you have to maintain attention, build interest and deliver a message. And finally you have to get results; you have to get the audience to “show you the money”! It’s that simple and that complex. And when you can seamlessly do all three really well; it makes the process look easy, fun and just like magic! But let’s be honest, it is not always as simple as it looks, is it? However this magic formula when learned and properly applied to what YOU do, can make magical results appear. Just consider what our street magician did. First he had to stop the crowd. He had to STAND OUT AND BE NOTICED by his potential market. How did he do this? He induced interest in his “yet to be assembled” audience by simply creating curiosity. His APPROACH and ENERGY led one to believe that something “special” was about to occur. And he appealed to OUR interests and desires. What is about to happen? Would I be interested in this? Would I enjoy this? Others are paying attention to this; what if I miss out on this experience? Powerful questions. Powerful emotions. Just what might happen next? Next he DELIVERED THE GOODS with only two goals in mind; making US happy and making US want more. He entertained, amazed, and kept us his audience interested by not knowing what would come next. There was no concern on his part for what he wanted, he was only interested in what WE wanted - to see magic and have fun! However this miracle worker was also planting the “secret magic seeds” for further wonderment. You see through out his performance he was not only getting us to further “buy into” what he was doing, but he was also constantly adding to his audience’s size. More and more his audience, and his potential customers, was continuing to build. The reasons were ingeniously simple. This magic man was good at what he did and very good at marketing. He knew his craft inside and out and more importantly he knew how to keep us interested in what he was doing (audience sampling). He also got us to relate to him (he was very personable) and to trust and like him (an audience knows when a performer really cares about them). In short he made us want to want more. This CONSISTENCY on his part, and continued wonderment on our part, built up our “time and emotion invested” relationship. It also signaled to those on the outside now passing by the social proof we as the audience offered this performer and created a whole new circle of curiosity. Why are so many people watching and what is going on? These people are really enjoying themselves, how much have I missed? Is this the last performance? More powerful questions. More powerful emotions. More audience. However keep in mind a large audience does not necessarily pay the bills! Old street performer’s axiom, “always leave an audience wanting more, but don’t forget to get them to pay for the ticket!” All our wonder worker’s magic is in vain unless our magician can make money doing this. It’s simple – get the money! And the closing technique he used is pure magic! What made “the sale” so magical was the lack of effort on “our magical salesperson’s” part. The sale was simply a forgone conclusion and a natural response on our part. It was the next and only possible step. His secret? The law of RECIPROCATION and TELLING HIS CUSTOMERS what they now need to do to complete the sale. It’s simple, it’s amazing and it works just like magic. Our magician just spent a half hour entertaining the audience without asking for anything; he simply gave of himself. The law of reciprocation states that if you give something to someone they will feel obligated to give something back. Next, our wonder worker simply tells the audience what to do. He tells them how to reciprocate, “ bills not coins – please – in this hat. If you had fun – if you liked the show – if you had a good time – if I made you smile - then please pay for it. You know what a movie costs, well I have to eat just like those actors. Thank you.” It was a bit more polished than that, but I think you get the idea. He made magic happen and he turned his “showmanship” into “salesmanship.” And it worked amazingly well. So how can you make this magic work for you? Just follow this magic formula for influencing others and apply it to what you want to sell, communicate, teach or get someone to do! FOCUS on your audience’s needs, desires and interests, not yours. Really, REALLY CARE about your audience. Be CONSISTENT in your actions and approach. GIVE more than you ever expect to receive. Seek to have FUN in what you do and SHARE this magic with others. ALWAYS ASK FOR THE SALE and be VERY CLEAR about what you want your audience to do. Finally, be PASSIONATE about what you do and in MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Remember Real Magic can happen only when people believe in themselves and are passionate about making a difference in their own life and the lives of others! Have focus! Be passionate about what you do! Create your own Real Magic!! PS: Try this magic for yourself. Imagine you were a “magical street performer” that had to get your audience to buy into what you are selling, and anything was possible! What would you do? Dream, fantasize, imagine, and write it down. Now work backwards to see how you could realistically apply this “magic formula” to what you do in your world. You may be surprised with the results.

And as we all know some days things do mount up more than others and we get a little exasperated with all that needs to be done. I was about to head into two weeks of non-stop shows and meetings while my wife and daughter were off to Florida for vacation. However we were ALL near exhausted with expectations of desired results, possible adventure and a constant reminder of what still needed to be done, both personally and professionally. On days like this we can lose focus on why we do what we do, and who and what is really important to us. This particular morning I was a little too quick with dismissing my six-year-old's request for attention and she quietly shrugged her shoulders and walked away. "Jacqueline what is it", I impatiently asked? "I just wanted to give you this Dad", she replied. She handed me a hand made letter and envelope she had most carefully created. Inside the letter read, as only a six-year-old daughter could write, "Dear Daddy, I love you and I will miss you. Love Jacqueline." I don't ever remember hugging her quite as lovingly as I did that morning as she wiped a tear from my eye. It was a magical moment I will never forget. Let us all never be TOO BUSY to forget just how special our family, friends and loved ones are. They are the ones that make real magic happen! They are the ones that remind us we are alive. -- "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing
is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." -- 6) FREE CREATIVITY QUIZ How creative are you? Try this quick exercise to discover what is considered creative and what is not. You may remember last year at this time my wife Suzanne (who was then Principal of St. Vincent's School in Oakville) was sent to this small Ghanain fishing village in Africa, as part of a global effort to save the community's school. Her adventure was the topic for an article I did entitled "Little Things Mean A Lot" (it is still available in our Little Extras section on our website). If you are new to this story, Kedzi is a very small village located on a narrow spit of sand between the Atlantic Ocean and the Keta Lagoon. This location means great fishing for the locals, but also extreme storms and flooding. To prevent the floods from destroying the buildings in the town, they are building structures to protect the land. Unfortunately they can't build enough structures to save the area where the school (which is the only one and the heart of the communicaty) is, so they have to build a new school on dryer land. In short they needed help and a lot of caring people lent assistance. Currently $130,000 of the needed $150,000 has been raised! Construction on the new school started in November 2002 with it's expected completion in April of 2003! Congratulations Kedzi!!
